Akwaaba!

Welcome to Elmina, the former castle_05.JPGheart of the West African gold and slave trade. The history is still alive in this fascinating small fishing town. You are invited to join a walk on the heritage trail which takes you back to the 15th Century. It leads you to the famous St. Georges Castle, the oldest European building in West Africa and monument for cruelty during the slave trade, Fort St. Jago, the Dutch cemetery and renovated colonial public and private buildings which are dotted all over the town.

But Elmina has more to offer: experience the rich and amazing culture of the people, observe the lively fishing harbor and watch the empty fishing boats leaving in the afternoon and coming back in the early morning when the women are waiting with their big baskets, ready to sell the fish on the market.

Enjoy Elmina’s eye catching Posuban shrines built by the military units, the Asafo companies, and perceive the town from the sea on a traditional fishing trip or on a quiet cruise on the Benya lagoon on board a traditional canoe. Also, visit the arts and crafts market in the heart of the old town.
